30″ x 17.5″ – Graphite

In many ways I see Blur as a fairly complex and honest self portrait. As I drew this animation I began to realize what it represents for me.

Like all of my work, this piece is introspective. It pushes me to ask questions of myself and it reflects a frustration and struggle I have with my place in this world. Who am I? What is important in this life? How do I achieve balance? I am an artist, father, son, husband, friend and teacher.

They do not all work together and therefore I struggle. With nashing teeth and clenched fists I am pushed and pulled. Life can be taxing and I have yet to realize my eyes are partially closed as I get lost in its dizzying spell.

3″ x 5″ – Conte and charcoal on paper mounted on aluminum

11 Drawings of my face and mouth. I am saying Yeah, Yeah, Yeah over and over again. There is no direct “meaning” to the piece. It is a fun, annoying and whimsical portrait.  At the end of the piece I finally say no. (not in this video) But not until 5 minutes of yeahs. This is a video showcasing the piece and contains details of a select few of the drawings I used for the animation as well as a sample installation view. Part of the actual animation plays at the end.

20″ x 30″ – graphite

Shifting images of moving lips flash across video screens as a digital animation is displayed alongside sequential  graphite drawings depicting the figure in motion. in this case, Kissing.

Scott Hutchison combines traditional drawing techniques with digital technology to create animated portraits, displayed on small LCD panels, exploring identity and introspection in layered compositions of realistically rendered but separate moments in time.

5″ x 7″ each still – 69 drawings on paper – Mounted on aluminum

A lot of people have said to me that this piece appears to be a metaphor of giving birth. I see that as a possible interpretation. This piece is a self portrait and a direct manipulation and distortion of my face. It’s that simple. However, since you asked… I see this piece as a metaphor for the constant push/pull and tug at our being.  The pressures of life, hidden and unseen.

5″ x 7.5″ each – 100 oil paintings on paper mounted on aluminum

This piece depicts two portraits. One portrait is static staring at the viewer and the other is crossing over it in an unending loop. This animation was meant to suggest the inner self, or the other self.

32 oil paintings – 3″ x 5″ – each on paper mounted on aluminum

Chatter Two is an animation consisting of 32 oil paintings of my mouth. The mouths are animated in oils and talking over one another, as they speak in concert they drown each other out.

“Googlie” is an oil painted animation. The paintings in this animation are a serious study of my eyes, however the eyes in “Googlie” move in all directions and don’t match each others movements. Watching the animation can have a dizzying effect and a whimsical quality. This animation contains 32 individually painted eyes and has no sound.

30″ x 40″ – Charcoal and Acrylic

A Trompe-l’œil animation. One of the portraits is three dimensional and the other is drawn with illusory dimension. As the three dimensional portrait is crumpled, the two dimensional version is drawn at the same time. White acrylic paint is used to paint-out where the drawing used to be.

Arlington County purchased the paintings I did for this animation in a public art call for entries. The county set aside 50k to purchase artwork from submissions around the metro area. I thank them for their purchase of the paintings. I also created a versions of Kiss here in graphite.
