The constrained nature of the figure is meant to reflect what it feels like in isolation, to desire connection and feel safe. The figure depicted here may be trapped, or constrained by the boarder of the picture plane, but the life within him is remains vibrant and full of potential.

I started this before the shutdown and all the political unrest in 2020. I mention this, because when it comes to my art, the message is never overtly political. Some may see this piece that way and that’s fine. It truly is in the eye of the beholder.

What I strive to do, is create an open ended story shrouded in a little mystery. That way, the work can have multiple meanings for now and in the future. Who knows the impact it will have a year or 20 years from now?

16″ x 20″ – Oil on Linen

Scott Hutchison’s Reimagined is a painting based on a graphite drawing on Yupo paper, found here. This portrait is an amalgamation of parts taken from multiple figures. Reimagined is as its name sake suggests… A transmogrification of one individual into something new.

18″ x 24″ – Oil on Linen

This portrait painting was painted from a digitally enhanced collage. Her hands jut from her head and splay out, as if they are a head-dress or a rooster’s comb.  Not only is time depicted as being displaced and out-of-sync, the rhythm of her hands look as if she is donning surreal ritualistic ornamentation. Sometimes compositions like “Ornament” are discoveries. They are composed randomly and then a story unfolds through the painting afterwards. She is stitched together from a multitude of people – ghosts or layered memories. She is timeless and self-aware. Is this depicting a crown? A rooster-like comb? As with all of my work, it is left for the viewer to interpret.

Open Wide is an experiment or exploration of a thicker painting process. The mood of the piece is also more aggressive, immediate and raw. The intention is to balance the mood with the brush work while focusing in on the face. Open Wide is intentionally different from my main body of work. In order to keep my work fresh it’s important that I allow for divergent subjects and experimental approaches to painting.

18″ x 20″ – Oil Painting on Linen

Three moments in time are seamlessly depicted in this triple portrait. The color, the poses and composition evoke conflicted feelings of urgency, quiet and complacency. There is an internal struggle at play, as well as an outward display of peace. “Impermanence” does not depict a singular idea or moment. It’s intentionally shrouded in mystery. It’s important for the viewer to take an active role in defining its greater meaning. 

16″ x 16″ – Oil on Linen

Scott Hutchison’s oil painting Plastic III is spontaneous, colorful and layered in a wet on wet Alla Prima fashion . This piece was painted in long sittings so that I could render the details with thick and wet paint. Plastic III was created as a way to abstract and add complex color notations to the portrait.  I do not want to paint a classical portrait.   I often look for ways to push my work in new directions through experimentation and play.   In this instance,, plastic wrap over the model’s face was used to help me do this. A moment of recognition is a color, value and proportional study for a larger work. I am exploring the ideas of identity, time and space. In this piece we have caught a glimpse into the past, present and future. Time is in flux, non-linear and fleeting.

This painting is painted over the top of another painting called Blue. For reasons of posterity, I will keep the original text for blue below as well as the original image in the slide show.  Blue was almost a finished piece, but I did not like it and tried to rework and force it to go to a different place. I failed in that attempt, and painted over the piece with the one you see now.

Blue is quiet. There is a subtlety of movement in her hair, and though her color tones are saturated and chromatically intense, it brings a calming feel to the work.

This piece contains two different faces. I am exploring new ways to abstract and complicate the figure. The overall effect of using two different individuals as the subject allows me the freedom to experiment with the compositional structure and play with the space. It also adds a new layer to its meaning. By merging different moments and figures together I am presenting the thought that we (all things) are made from our time, memory and our experiences. Time is also not linear, but layered and complicated. It complicates us.
