44″ diam – Oil Painting on Aluminum

Dreamtank is a round painting of multiple figures on aluminum.  The woman depicted in the painting is at peace, sleeping or in a dream state. She is displaced – out of sync – and we can see her from a multitude of angles and moments in time. The figure is confined by the circle, creating a repeating pattern of feet, heads and hands.  The repeated figure is meant to evoke a passage of time as one segmented figure fades into an other in a never ending loop. What does it mean? As with all of Scott Hutchison’s work; the meaning is left for the viewer to interpret.

Scott Hutchison’s Her Eyes Opened is a painting based on a graphite drawing found here. The title of this dual portrait speaks to the question of the self and it is meant to represent a moment of self discovery. The figure pictured here has just opened her eyes and we are seeing her transform, or dissolve. She understands who she is becoming and peers back at us as if to ask if we are ready. The double portrait represents her complex personality and her confident gaze suggests that she sees you.

The woman in this piece is seeking answers from within. She has a soft, quiet and contemplative way about her; enhanced by the coolness of the skin, the tight composition and dark background. She may be physically confined, however she is not distressed. She is almost hugging herself and set free by her thoughts.

She Ends and Begins is painted from a digital photograph and from imagination. I intentionally pushed the contrast between warm skin tones with synthetic cool shadows. The intended effect was to create a psychological impact through color. Though the painting has a lot of color, it is visually quiet as the eyes gaze beyond the frame in a contemplative way.

Oil Painting on Aluminum – 4″ x 6″

Divided is an experiment or exploration of a thicker painting process. The mood of the piece is quiet, but the paint color has been applied thickly, bold and in a direct manner. The intention is to balance the mood with the brush work while focusing in on the face. Divided is intentionally different from my main body of work. In order to keep my main body of work fresh it’s important that I allow for divergent subjects and approaches to painting in some of my art.

Scott Hutchison’s Reimagined is a painting based on a graphite drawing on Yupo paper, found here. This portrait is an amalgamation of parts taken from multiple figures. Reimagined is as its name sake suggests… A transmogrification of one individual into something new.

9″ x 12″ – Oil on Canvas

Awake is a 9″ x 12″ portrait oil painting on canvas. Do you notice the two portraits? One with her eyes closed and the other with her eyes open and staring into the light above her. For me, upon further reflection, the portrait appears to shift between a waking and a sleeping state. There is an immediacy to the mark and a spontaneity to the painting that I miss in my other work and wanted to capture here.

The composition is derived from multiple poses and reassembled through paint. This piece is indicative of my current body of work conceived from a long standing interest in animation and the visual effect of movement and time. 

18″ x 24″ – Oil on Linen

This portrait painting was painted from a digitally enhanced collage. Her hands jut from her head and splay out, as if they are a head-dress or a rooster’s comb.  Not only is time depicted as being displaced and out-of-sync, the rhythm of her hands look as if she is donning surreal ritualistic ornamentation. Sometimes compositions like “Ornament” are discoveries. They are composed randomly and then a story unfolds through the painting afterwards. She is stitched together from a multitude of people – ghosts or layered memories. She is timeless and self-aware. Is this depicting a crown? A rooster-like comb? As with all of my work, it is left for the viewer to interpret.

Open Wide is an experiment or exploration of a thicker painting process. The mood of the piece is also more aggressive, immediate and raw. The intention is to balance the mood with the brush work while focusing in on the face. Open Wide is intentionally different from my main body of work. In order to keep my work fresh it’s important that I allow for divergent subjects and experimental approaches to painting.

Three moments in time are seamlessly depicted in this triple portrait. The color, the poses and composition evoke conflicted feelings of urgency, quiet and complacency. There is an internal struggle at play, as well as an outward display of peace. “Impermanence” does not depict a singular idea or moment. It’s intentionally shrouded in mystery. It’s important for the viewer to take an active role in defining its greater meaning.
