Scott Hutchison’s Infinity is a color pencil drawing of two hands. It is a study for a painting titled: Tenuous Grip. The hands position looks like it could be making a symbol for Infinity. It’s fitting, as it relates to all of my latest work. My artistic research focuses on the idea that we are not a singular snapshot in time, but a product of a deeper pool of experiences. Most are based on digital collages I put together from multiple poses. Not Infinity. The irony is that this pose is quiet and contemplative. A moment of recognition explores the ideas of identity through a representation of multiple faces in one portrait. It is a color, value and proportional color pencil study for a future larger work.

10.5″ x 20″ – Color Pencil

A moment of recognition is a color, value and proportional color pencil study for a future oil painting. I am exploring the ideas of identity, time and space, much like most of my current body of work.

Color Pencil – 16.5″ x 10.5″

A surreal color pencil drawing of a woman with her eyes closed. She hugs herself and peers inward. The quiet mood of “Close Your Eyes, So You Might See” is enhanced by the soft colors, the faint light on her face and her pose. I am exploring new ways to abstract and complicate the figure by overlapping two figures..The overall effect of using different figures as the subject allows me the freedom to experiment with the compositional structure and play with space. Using multiple figures also adds a new layer to the psychological impact of the piece and surprises come into view.

9.5″ x 12″ – graphite

At Peace is a graphite drawing study for the painting on the right. It’s a unique and one of a kind portrait drawing, and an amalgamation of parts taken from multiple figures. This is a unique and one of a kind drawing, its purpose was to flush out the composition, darks, lights and proportional structure while at the same time, finding its own mood and expression.

8″ x 12.5″ – Graphite Drawing

Scott Hutchison’s Eyes Opened is a graphite drawing I completed as a study for Her Eyes Opened.  The purpose of doing a study is to flush out the composition, darks, lights and proportional structure without the burden of using color and oil paint. The title of this dual portrait speaks to the question of self and the discovery of who we are. The figure pictured here has just opened her eyes and for this moment has come to an understanding of who she is. The double portrait represents her complex personality and the subtle ebb and flow of her conscious inner mind with her material and physical one. This is a unique and one of a kind drawing, not a print. 12″ x 18″ – Color Pencil

Ornament is a color pencil study for the oil painting above. It is a continuation of my interest in abstracting the human form and movement. The hands and fingers have an ornamental quality and extend beyond the figure, reminiscent of a ceremonial headdress.

10.5″ x 7.5″ – Graphite Drawing

Medusa is a surrealistic drawing of multiple figures assembled together into my signature style of realism. This haunting composition focuses in on the face surrounded by hands that pull, melt and protrude from her form. I composed the hands and fingers in such a way that they almost seem alive. Like the snakes in Medusa’s hair. It is a study of a painting I did with the same name: Medusa Painting
