8.25″ x 12.25″ – Graphite Drawing

Held Spellbound is a graphite drawing study that became the impetus two for three paintings: Twist, Inside Out and another still in progress. The purpose of doing a study is to flush out the composition, darks, lights and proportional structure without the burden of using color and oil paint. I enjoy making studies, it’s an opportunity to experiment and tackle a subject that may or may not see the light of day.

Procession is a graphite drawing on thick archival Fabriano paper using Staedtler pencils. This is a unique and one of a kind drawing, not a print. Procession has multiple meanings. The hands and the composition evoke movement while at the same time the figure imbues an air of quiet acceptance. The structure of the figure is in flux. She is not quite there. She is lost in the procession of hands and their rhythmic spiral. There are two other versions of Procession, a painting and ink drawing, each one evokes a different feeling.

Crown is a graphite drawing intended as a future painting. It is of a woman’s portrait in profile, and drawn in graphite. “Crown” is a study. It’s an opportunity to experiment and tackle a subject that may or may not see the light of day. I really hope this one makes it into a painting!

This small graphite drawing is a study of hands and a continuation of my interest in abstracting the human form. This piece evokes a sense of anxiety by the way it is cropped and the repetition of the fingers. The pose is reminiscent of the mask-like gestures children do with their hands in front of their face without the playful qualities.

Procession is a graphite and ink drawing on archival thick 300lb Arches Watercolor Paper using Faber-Castell’s archival black ink pen #235. Procession has multiple meanings. This wonderful little self portrait drawing is a study I did for the painting “Wanting to Speak”. You can find it here.  This self portrait drawing is smaller than most of my work, howevver it holds up well when viewed at a distance. This is due to the high contrast values and the larger than life scale of the face within the composition.  The figure in this drawing appears to be looking through a window, but instead of leading with the eyes, he is perhaps ready to say something.  Therefore with “Waiting to speak” I wanted the viewer to focus on the lips and nose of the face. The window of the soul is not the eyes. To me it has always been the mouth, this piece is my way of reflecting that idea.
