21.5 x 20 – Oil Painting on Wood

Entwined is a surrealistic double portrait painting on wood panel. The expression on her face and her pose is meant to be open for interpretation. Her hands appear to be exploring her face, holding it in place, or even perhaps removing it. What do you see? Does the double portrait symbolize a twin or inner self?  This painting is a metaphor for the proverbial mask we all wear when interacting with the world.

21.5 x 20 – Oil on Wood

The Decision is an oil painting on wood. It is meant to evoke the moment before a decision. I like to think that whatever she decides, there will always be multiple outcomes. The layering of multiple figures in most of my work is meant to illustrate time and the visual, abstract and complex residue that remains from the daily choices we make.

28″ x 30″ – Oil on Linen

This painting is inspired by my oil painted animations. These animations are separate images played in a sequence that create a movie.  With my latest work, the images are superimposed and collaged digitally. The sequence is effectively flattened and layered in one composition. I want the viewer to see multiple scenes or poses in one composition. The underlying message is that we are a sequence of experiences and a layer of knowledge and we (our mind) chooses how our experience and knowledge defines us. I use painting to describe this by choosing what part of the body to reveal and what to conceal. Who is she becoming?

24″ x 32″ – Oil on Linen

A larger than life double portrait. The psychological impact of this painting is felt by the scale of the faces and the conflict between the expressions. The painting is indicative of the message I am trying to convey with all of my current work.  We are in part a product of our experiences and the choices we make. This is simply a portrait of two separate events creating a whole. 

14″ x 11″ – Oil on Linen

I really like the immediacy and spontaneity of this painting. It’s a two layer alla prima portrait without an underpainting. (Painted in just a few sittings) I painted this piece while searching for a way to abstract and add complex color notations to the portrait. If you can’t tell by my other work, I do not want to paint a classical portrait.   I often look for ways to push my work in new directions. I like to experiment and let a painting take me to new places. In this instance,, plastic wrap over the model’s face was used to help me do this.
