20″ x 30″ – Graphite Drawing

Initially the piece was to compositionally end with one 22″ x 30″ piece of paper. One figure with a birds nest in her hair.  However something did not sit right with me. Though I quite like the pose and the mood of the composition, I wanted a greater conflict within the piece and to create a sense of wonder and mystery for the viewer. It is this wonderment, discovery and curiosity that keeps me creating, painting and drawing day in and day out. With these thoughts in mind I came up with the idea of adding more birds. The Working title is “Birds”.

The Making of Birds

19″ x 25″ – Charcoal

This is the first of a new series of drawings called “Plastic”. This face is one of the hardest I have worked on. The abstraction over the face is caused by pressure and tension as well as from light reflecting from plastic wrap over the face.

20″ x 30″ – Graphite Drawing

The third in a graphite drawn triptych called “Displaced”. This piece like the others continues with my investigation of the moving image. But instead of creating multiple frames for an animation I wanted to spill a scene onto one page. The process of layering multiple figures together encourages abstraction and creates a hauntingly rhythmic mood. The other two images are: “Displaced” and “Shift“

“Shift” is a layered drawing depicting the artist in a submissive pose analogous to a string-puppet or marionette.  The drawing illustrates a “Shift” or acceptance to an unseen actor, force or idea. It is a an abstracted and surreal drawing. A broken self portrait.

This is the second image in the Displaced series.  The figure in this body of drawings is going through a transition. A reassembling or reorganizing of the body.

This layered drawing depicts the artist in an internal struggle to understand his place in this world.  This drawing illustrates the idea that we are products of our experiences. We are shaped by layered moments of time and through our experience with it.
