20″ x 30″ – Graphite Drawing

This is my newest piece. My second in the Displaced series. Two separate images taken at different times are layered together in this piece and appear to be in the same space and holding each other. I enjoy the abstraction that is happening. The arms and parts of the face are merging with one another. On a side note: The subtlety of this piece is proving to be a challenge for me. Most of my work is more aggressive and stark with contrast. I wrote a blog entry about this piece here.

30″ x 17.5″ – Graphite

In many ways I see Blur as a fairly complex and honest self portrait. As I drew this animation I began to realize what it represents for me.

Like all of my work, this piece is introspective. It pushes me to ask questions of myself and it reflects a frustration and struggle I have with my place in this world. Who am I? What is important in this life? How do I achieve balance? I am an artist, father, son, husband, friend and teacher.

They do not all work together and therefore I struggle. With nashing teeth and clenched fists I am pushed and pulled. Life can be taxing and I have yet to realize my eyes are partially closed as I get lost in its dizzying spell.

20″ x 30″ – Graphite Drawing

This portrait is a study for the painting with the same name. You can see the painting here. This drawing is based on a sequence of digital scans taken of my face. The smearing and smudging of the skin is the effect of moving my face while the scanner is running. It is purposeful but the shapes and digital tearing was random. The image is then digitally enhanced, cropped and melded together from multiple scans. I spend quite a bit of time with the digital aspect of the piece before it’s ready to paint or draw.

This drawing is from a digitally manipulated and collaged scan of my face. It is a traditionally rendered image and study for a process/effect called time displacement or slit scan. Simply put, time displacement or slit scan is the visual result of multiple time frames viewed in one composition.
