Shifting images of moving lips flash across video screens as a digital animation is displayed alongside sequential  graphite drawings depicting the figure in motion. in this case, Kissing.

Scott Hutchison combines traditional drawing techniques with digital technology to create animated portraits, displayed on small LCD panels, exploring identity and introspection in layered compositions of realistically rendered but separate moments in time.

A lot of people have said to me that this piece appears to be a metaphor of giving birth. I see that as a possible interpretation. This piece is a self portrait and a direct manipulation and distortion of my face. It’s that simple. However, since you asked… I see this piece as a metaphor for the constant push/pull and tug at our being.  The pressures of life, hidden and unseen.

The graphite drawing is a still life of 50+ paintings of my eyes. They are posed in a line, like a deck of cards.

“Sacred” is a still life created from discarded objects. The objects chosen for the composition have no personal meaning outside this arrangement. Ironically, by combining the objects they are transformed and appear “Sacred” and obtain a sense of purpose. 

The child’s shoes are placed perfectly upon a shelf with a set of feet floating above them. This juxtaposition visually represents time, growing up and the loss of innocence.

Children’s shoes sometimes appear in other works of mine over the years. They can carry a psychological weight that I find appealing. Such as in one of my drawings called: “Empty“.
