26 oil paintings on paper – Mounted on aluminum – 8″ x 10″ each still

360 is an oil painting animation and contains 26 Oil paintings of my face in a 360 degree infinite loop. The portrait is my face, painted in a modern alla prima approach where the painter builds form and volume with wet layers of colored pigment. My goal was to create an active and gestural portrait with paint. The accompanying video below shows the oil painted animation and reveals the bit of my process and how it is displayed.

I used 42 oil paintings of my mouth to create this stop motion animation. I have painted enough mouth movements to say almost anything. What was the most profound phrase I could think up? “I don’t know.”

This three word phrase is important for me. “I don’t know” is honest. There are more things that you and I don’t know than we do know. I like to think that those three words “I Don’t know” is akin to opening a door to greater understanding.
