40″ x 50″ – Oil on Linen
Waiting for God is based on a nightmare I had in graduate school. The nightmare was of a skeletal creature breaking through the floor and hell bent on attacking me. It effected me so much, and was so vivid, I wanted to paint the creature as I remembered it. However, when composing the image I realized that the painting had a larger meaning for me. It was a reflection of my anxiety and the uncertainty I felt after moving to the Washington DC area, as well as my my loss of faith. This is made clearer if you know that the figure is me. ( I had long hair then ) I painted myself waiting, – in limbo – between the world beyond the window frame and the one under ground.
