In reply to <a href="https://scotthutchison.com/drawings/drawing-hands-in-color-pencil/#comment-111">Taylor June Harrington</a>.

Good question. I don't have direct experience with either of these applied under the oil paint. My best advice is to keep the pastel and/or pencil very thin. Color pencils are waxy and if layered too heavily could act as a resist and I would be concerned that pastel might be too dusty and therefore do the same if too heavily applied. I want to add that adhesion may not be an issue at first, but could be a longer-term one that you don't notice until the top paint film ages. A conservator would be most knowledgeable here.

when doing an oil painting - can you start with a pastel or colored pencil drawing and then oil paint over it? Have you ever done that? I am a pastel portrait artist who just started oil, and have no idea how to use the medium, and would love to know your layering process. Thank you!

Hi, this is all very useful. I'm a newbie to oils too! Is it possible that different brands/makers of oils are sometimes transparent and sometimes opaque, even if the colours are the same?
Thank you so much
