Birds - digital collage - drawing

A combination of thoughts and images showing my journey forward on the triptych called "Birds"  This image illustrates what the final piece will look like when I am finished. It is a digital collage put together with about 10 layers of images and 4 photos in photoshop.  It is my sketch and helps guide me compositionally.

Fragmented - Digital Animation

Scott Hutchison - Fragmented - Digital Painted Animation

I have restarted a piece I began working on in 2011. It is called Fragmented. This is my first piece that is completely painted digitally. I am using a technique called Rotoscoping . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotoscoping This project contains 827 stills and each painting takes about an hour to complete. Only 827 hours? Insane! But I have an insane sleep schedule sooo… Anyways, I think it could be a killer project and have quite an impact when it’s finished.

One figure with a birds nest in her hair. I wanted a greater conflict within the piece and to create a sense of wonder and mystery for the viewer. It is this wonderment, discovery and curiosity that keeps me creating, painting and drawing day in and day out. With these thoughts in mind I came up with the idea of adding more birds. The Working title is "Birds".

Flowers & Landscape in Graphite

Landscape drawing by Scott Hutchison

My process of creating is not bound by any one subject or approach. It is an honest connection within myself, the world around us and the medium I have chosen. I particularly enjoy the linear and figurative elements of foliage. Branches and pedals twist on themselves and reach through the composition.

This is the first of a new series of drawings called "Plastic". This face is one of the hardest I have worked on. The abstraction over the face is caused by pressure and tension as well as from light reflecting from plastic wrap over the face.

What to do when your art fails.*

Scott Hutchison's Drawing called Hold - He hates this piece.

I have spent 20+ hours on a piece of art that frankly, needs to burn. What happened? This drawing is not in anyway what I intended it to be. It fails in so many ways. One: It is drawn sloppily. Two: It is Tacky. Three: It has a labored, overworked feel when you see it upon close inspection. Four: It poses to be more than it is, trying too hard to fit in.

Triptych - Figure Drawings

Scott Hutchison - Triptych- Graphite Figure Drawing Triptych

Though they are unfinished I thought I would post this triptych to document my progress.  My studio space is small and therefore they were composed and drawn separately. It is important that each image carries its own weight and works by itself, however these photos help me study their appearance as a group.

Community Canvas - Public Art Project at The Art League

Scott Hutchison Community Canvas Public Art Project at the Art League
The Art League asked me to come up with an interactive public art project to help commemorate their 60th Anniversary. It was a puzzle mural that anyone could take part in. In January 2014 anyone could walk into the gallery and work on a supplied puzzle piece and add it to the wall. These are photos of the piece being created. You can see there are drawings, paintings, sculptures, photographs, etc. I have been told that the Community Cnvas will be reassembled later this year in a new location.
